Rev. Theodore “Ted” L. Yewey, age 90, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, formerly of Celina, Ohio, peacefully passed away at his home on September 21, 2024. He was born on April 15, 1934, in Center Township, Ohio, to the late Merle and Minnie (Shank) Yewey. Ted was preceded in death by his beloved wife, V. June (Coats) Yewey, who passed away on November 14, 2021.
Ted is survived by his children: Randall (Patricia) Yewey of Celina, Susan (Ken) Vendryes of Troy, Ohio, Gerald (Claudia) Yewey of Germany, and Kathryn (Jeff) Pence of Tipp City, Ohio. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and cherished by ten great-grandchildren.
A dedicated scholar, Ted graduated as valedictorian from Center Township High School in 1951 and later earned his Doctorate of Ministry from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, a degree conferred upon him by none other than Willie Nelson.
Ted devoted 38 years to the Methodist ministry, serving with grace and compassion. He also owned and operated Sears Hometown stores in St. Marys and Wapakoneta, and continued his love for storytelling as a reporter for the Wapakoneta Daily News. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Otterbein Communities in Cridersville and St. Marys, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many.
He was a member of Grand Lake Methodist Church in Celina, Ohio. Ted enjoyed refinishing furniture and the challenge of making something old into a treasure again. Ted was an accomplished writer and spent many hours working on poems and short stories. He also enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter exploring family genealogy and visiting his family farm.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, September 23, 2024, at Cisco Funeral Homes in Celina.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the Cisco Funeral Home, officiated by his son, Pastor Randall Yewey. Friends and family are welcome to gather from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Tuesday morning at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Hamilton Bethel Cemetery in Mendon, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grand Lake United Methodist Church in Celina.
