Alice Kathryn (Heininger) Freed, age 92, formerly of Findlay, Ohio, passed away at Otterbein Retirement Community, St. Marys, Ohio, on Sunday, January 25, 2015. She was born December 21, 1922, in Peking (Beijing), China, where her parents, Charles S. and Lula (McKinney) Heininger, were Methodist Protestant missionaries in Kalgan, China. On December 5, 1943, she married the love of her life, Joe Franklin Freed, and they had 71 years together.
She is survived by her husband Joe and their four children: Margaret (Dwight) Steen, Denver, Colorado; Dr. Thomas Freed, Grafton, Wisconsin; Dr. Donald (Debra) Freed, Suttons Bay, Michigan; and Rebecca (Douglas) Warren, Findlay, Ohio; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her brother Rev. James B. (Nancy) Heininger of Granville, Ohio. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Crabbe and Helen Bernard, and a brother, Charles M. Heininger.
Katie was a 1940 graduate of Forest High School in Forest, Ohio, and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1943 from The Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati.
She was a former member of Saint Andrews United Methodist Church in Findlay. She was most recently a member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Celina.
Katie’s life was dedicated to faith, love, and service to others. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Meyer Room in Otterbein Retirement Community, St. Marys. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
